One of Britain's most impressive birds, the magnificent Golden Eagle (Aquila chrysaetos) is found in remote mountain areas of Scotland and the North of England. With a wing span of over two metres, the Eagle can soar effortlessly before diving rapidly to take its prey it its powerful talons; it lives mainly on rabbits, hares, small birds and carrion. The Golden Eagle builds a large nest of sticks on a rocky ledge and two eggs are laid in April, although usually only one chick will survive.

Britain's most common bird of prey, the Kestrel (Falco tinnunculus) likes open ground and can often be seen hovering over fields and roadside verges. Kestrels have long slender wings and tails, and grow up to about 35cm in length. The main diet of Kestrels consists of small mammals such as mice and voles although the will take small birds and insects. They may nest in cavities in trees or often take over old nests of other birds; 4-5 eggs are laid from April onwards.

Species of Peregrines (Falco peregrinus) are found in most parts of the world and, as they are outstanding hunters noted for their speed and precision, they are most highly prized for falconry. The Peregrine lives in open mountainous country in coastal areas and the 2-6 eggs are laid on a ledge site, the young flying after about 40 days. Although numbers have been depleted due to the effects of pesticides, the Peregrine population in Britain is now believed to be increasing.
