The Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos) is widespread throughout the world and is the ancestor of all domestic ducks. Typical dabbling ducks, they feed on or near the water surface and also on land. The male has the distinctive dark green head, while the female has plainer brownish plumage, both sexes have violet-blue wing patches. Usually 8-10 eggs are laid in a nest on the ground. Young Mallards can leave the nest within 24 hours of hatching and can swim and feed themselves straight away.

The Pheasant (Phasianus colchicus) was introduced to this country (Great Britain) from Asia in the Middle Ages and is probably the best known of all game birds. The male is particularly colourful with an iridescent dark green head and coppery brown upperparts. The female, which is smaller than the male, has brown plumage and is less variable in colour. Pheasants prefer open wooded country, feeding on seeds, berries and insects. These ground dwelling birds usually roost in trees at night and can fly strongly though only for a short distance.

Found mostly in agricultural country and heaths, the Grey or Common Partridge (Perdix perdix) is native to this country (Great Britain) and is one of our most popular game birds. They live mostly on vegetation, but also eat worms and insects. Although they are ground dwelling birds, Partridges fly low and fast when disturbed alternating rapid wing beats with short glides. The 9-20 eggs are laid in a shallow nest on the ground in April or May, the clutch being incubated in 23-25 days.

Of the four species of Grouse found in Britain, the Red and Black Grouse are the best known, although the black is no longer numerous. The Red Grouse (Lagopus scoticus) inhabits heather-clad moorlands whilst the Black Grouse (Tetrao tetrix) is found in grassy woodland clearings. All Grouse are short winged birds with low, whirring flight and all nest on the ground where the female is camouflaged by her dull plumage. The chicks are able to walk and feed themselves soon after hatching.
