The versatile and intelligent Fox (Vulpes vulpes) can adapt to a variety of conditions. It is found mostly in woodland and open country, although recently it has been increasingly in urban areas. A skillful hunter, the Fox preys mainly on rodents, rabbits and birds, and may become pests due to their frequent raids on poultry. The Fox is most active at night, resting in its burrow during the day. A litter of four young is born usually in the spring. The male stays with his mate bringing food for the family until the cubs can care for themselves in the autumn.

The beautifully furred Otter (Lutra lutra) is well adapted to an aquatic life - it is a fine swimmer although also agile on land. Otters are elusive and solitary creatures which usually rest during the day in burrows in river banks. They are most active at night when they venture out to feed on fish, frogs, water birds and small mammals. They may breed at any time of year having two or four pups to a litter. Although Otters are scarce in Great Britain, their numbers are starting to increase again in areas where pollution is being reduced and are most common in the West Country.

Badgers (Meles meles) are sociable creatures which live in family groups in extensive burrows known as setts usually found in woodland. With its silver-grey coat and distinctive black head stripes, the Badger is one of Britain's best loved mammals. Badgers are nocturnal and emerge from the sett at dusk to feed on earthworms, small mammals, slugs, fruit and nuts. Badgers mate in the summer, and the litter of two-four young are born the following spring, the cubs living with their parents at least until the autumn.

Red deer are the largest species of deer native to Britain. As a result of forest clearance and sheep farming, these woodland animals have adapted to life on high open moorland and are common in the Scottish highlands. The red Deer live in segregated herds, except during the rut. Stags defend their territories by locking antlers with male rivals and uttering loud Roars. Despite the stags regal appearance their social life revolves around the female herd led by a leading hind.
