The Border Collie is a highly intelligent and hard working dog that responds quickly to training and makes a faithful companion. The Jack Russell breed is named after its founder the Reverend John Russell who was born in Devon in 1795. By the late 19th century the breed had become well established. An ideal hunter, the Jack Russell Terrier is small but agile, patient and brave, and much prized by the hunter for its ability to go to ground. The coat comes in three types - smooth, broken and rough. The colours are primarily white with tan or black markings on the head, muzzle and loins.

The Labrador Retriever was imported into England in the early 19th century from Newfoundland where it had been widely used by fishermen. Good natured, loyal and hard working, the Labrador's keen sense of smell enabled it to be used by the military for mine detection, whilst its calm temperament makes it an outstanding retrieving gundog. The Labrador has a strong body with a wide chest, and the thick short coat is black, chocolate or yellow.

Spaniels are good all purpose gundogs which also make popular domestic pets. A traditional hunting breed, the Springer Spaniel is in its element when flushing out game. They will remain motionless until the shot is fired when they will quickly retrieve the quarry. The coat is long and slightly wavy and the usual colours are liver or black with white markings. Spaniels are easy to care for, but do need plenty of exercise.

A lurcher is not a breed but a type of dog usually having a member of the greyhound family as one of its parents. It was developed to produce an efficient hunting companion and as a popular poacher's dog. The coat can be rough or smooth. The size of a lurcher can vary enormously it can range in size from nineteen inch whippet crosses to huge Deerhound crosses of thirty inches. The lurcher is used to hunt animals by sight such as rabbit, hare, and fox, and also makes an excellent pet.

The Staffordshire Bull Terrier despite its historical reputation for fighting is a bold, fearless, loyal and totally reliable dog also one of the most popular of all the terriers. Shaped from a variety of different types of shepherd dogs, the German Shepherd Dog can trace its origins back to the 7th century. They are used as companions, guard dogs, sniffer dogs, police dogs, guide dogs and, of course, sheepdogs. Ideally dogs measure between 60-65cms at the withers and bitches measure between 55-60cms. The West Highland Terrier was originally registered as the Roseneath Terrier in 1908; officially its name was changed to West Highland White Terrier in 1909. An alert, self-reliant and friendly dog always white in colour, with an approximate height at withers of 10 – 11 ins. The coat is long and free from curl on the outer with short soft and close fur of the undercoat with considerable hair around the face giving it the typical westie expression.

The pointer originated in Europe approximately during the middle of the 17th century. A handsome and kindly breed, alert and considerate, dignified without timidity toward either man or dog. The breed’s young, have a hunting instinct from the age of around three months. Renowned for its ability to point to the bird with its nose body and tail in a straight line.

The Yorkshire Terrier made its first appearance at a bench show in England in 1861 as a broken haired Scotch Terrier.
